Core functions

The EQC’s statutory functions are:

We provide natural disaster insurance for residential property (dwellings and some coverage of land)

EQCover covers the first $150,000 (+GST) towards the loss or damage to your home or land caused by disasters such as earthquakes, landslips, volcanic eruptions, hydrothermal activity, and tsunamis. We also cover damage caused by fire as a result of any of those disasters and some land damage

We administer the Natural Disaster Fund (NDF), including its investments and reinsurance.

The purpose of the Natural Disaster Fund is to make sure that claims for damage by people with home insurance can be paid out in the event of a natural disaster.

We fund research and education on natural disasters and ways of reducing their impact.

Through our public outreach work we aim to create an Aotearoa New Zealand that is better informed about our natural hazards, and more prepared for their impacts. By utilising a combination of marketing campaigns, partnerships and sponsorships, we reach a large number of New Zealanders every year to help them make their homes and communities safer, stronger and more resilient.
